MARKET PLACE  This project for a community garden centre in a deprived suburban area of Glasgow proposed to occupy part of 3.74 ha of unused land, sought to be leased from the Council. The client, a local voluntary organisation, aimed to stimulate food growing activities as a means to improve residents' health through cultivation and consumption of grown products.  The open site provided a real opportunity to explore the concept of inside/outside spaces whilst adopting a fully sustainable approach.

Each of the core programmes is sheltered in a separate light structure and together all structures are linked under a semi-transparent envelop, akin to plants in a greenhouse. The double-skin concept also permits the creation of flexible 'in-between' spaces that are permeable to use both by the client target group (for training, meeting and storage), and the public (market activities, café).  It also creates a micro-climate allowing food growing activities 'indoor' regardless of weather conditions.
